ABST310: Indigenous Film: The World through the Eyes of 'Others'?

This course examines the ways in which indigenous peoples are creating contemporary indigenous identities and expressing that through the art form of film.

To do so involves, of course, interaction with 'Other' peoples and 'things' in the world. For example, the use of the technologies involved in film production always involves particular kinds of appropriations, interpretations, negotiations and accommodations of 'Other', within an indigenous cultural framework, which produces film 'saying' as much about 'us' as it does about 'them'.

Fundamentally, then, the unit is about the complex ways that indigenous peoples negotiate modernity, use it, change it and choose how to communicate that experience.
