ANTH361: The Anthropology of Politics and Power |
This unit offers a detailed examination of politicized forms of power and their manifestation at the supranational, national and local level. Taking a cross cultural perspective, it will consider different political systems in both contemporary and historical context and explore how modern systems such as nationalism interact with older relations of power (eg gender, or caste) in their attempts to produce governable populations. How does this mixture create an uneven version of contemporary modernity which produces quite different ways of giving meaning to and of living the conditions of equality and inequality? How do different societies simultaneously effect assimilation and marginalisation? These themes will be explored though specific locations such as the negotiation and contestation of indigeneity within state and global structures.
