ANTH381: The Body of Phenomenology and Post-Colonial Theory |
This course will introduce students to the centrality of the body in human experience by looking at two theoretical traditions. The first part of the course will take students through the phenomenology of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty while highlighting the usefulness of their work for anthropology; the second part of the course will entail an examination of post-colonial theory, its critique of the ongoing legacies of colonial representation for contemporary western representations and theory. The implications of this critique for anthropological study of embodied experience in postcolonial societies will be emphasized.
