This unit looks at Australian vegetation in a world context, and world vegetation from a southern-hemisphere perspective. It includes plant biogeography and ecophysiology components. Topics include: world vegetation types; geographic distribution of Australian plant communities now and in the recent past; origin, evolution and affinities of the Australian flora; environmental factors affecting plant distributions; structural and functional adaptations of plants to extreme conditions, including aridity and low temperatures; and human impacts on vegetation.
The unit will be of interest to biology, physical geography and environmental science students. Laboratory and field work are important components of this unit.
