BIOL371: Biosynthetic Pathways |
This unit will be offered in even years. The unit has three lectures and one tutorial/discussion session per week. It deals with some recent advances at the interface between biochemistry and medicine, extends the understanding of intermediary metabolism, and introduces selected secondary metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of natural products and the role of cofactors and coenzymes in metabolism and biosynthesis. Topics covered include: actions of free radicals and antioxidants in living organisms, biosynthesis and metabolism of amino acids, nucleosides, vitamins, lipids, antibiotics, pigments and secondary metabolites.
