CUL201: Australian Cultural Studies |
Introduces the distinctive work of Australian Cultural Studies by examining the construction of Australian identity in popular cultural forms. It will examine examples from visual art, cinema, television, and magazines. Topics will include the constructions of gender, the cultural construction of Australian history in heritage sites and museums, and representations of the political. There will be a particular focus on ethnicity, 'race' and the construction of multiculturalism. A continuing theme will be the different constructions of Aboriginality in the periods examined. Material to be studied will range from Australian film (for example, Crocodile Dundee, Jedda) and television ('Prisoner' or 'Cell Block H', 'Water Rats' and 'Wildside', 'Embassy') to magazine advertisements in The Good Weekend. SOC175 is recommended as valuable preparatory study for this unit.
