ENGL120: Introduction to English |
An introduction to the study of English at university level. No special prior knowledge of English literature is assumed and students with backgrounds in all kinds of HSC English are welcome. The unit builds upon the traditional kinds of literary study, which some students may have encountered at school, developing and extending them into such new areas as the study of non-literary texts, for example film and television, and literary and cultural theory. The texts studied are diverse in kind and are drawn from various countries and periods.
Students are guided through an examination of such fundamental questions, topics, concepts and terms as: what is a 'text' and what is special about the literary text; literature and gender; narrative; genre; authorship; cultural paradigm shift; literature in colonial and post-colonial societies.
