GEOS311: Geography of the Asia-Pacific Region |
This unit provides a regional geography of Australia's 'neighbourhood' and explores the processes and consequences of development in the Asia-Pacific region. The region is presented as a highly differentiated entity undergoing rapid social, spatial and political transformation. The key themes of the course are: economic, political and social change in the Asia Pacific: shifts from authoritarianism to democratic governments and from socialism to capitalism, subsistence to consumerism and state-society responses to further integration with the 'west'; Australia-Asia relations and the Australian media's perception of Asia; dilemmas associated with development and economic and political change in the region; contestation by various stakeholders over resources at various scales; (international, national and local level); urbanisation and the Asian city.
