GEOS363: Post-Colonial Cities |
This unit examines processes of urbanisation, urban structure, urban problems and urban policy and planning and under alternative socio-economic, political and historical systems. Particular attention will be given to cities and urban development in Asia and the Pacific, Africa and Latin America. It will explore cross-cultural theories of urbanisation and urban growth, paying particular attention to traditional pre-colonial urban development, 19th and 20th century colonialism and urban development and post-colonial cities. It will examine current urban problems in post-colonial cities including housing and squatter settlements, social disadvantage and minorities, the formal and informal economic sectors, migration and homelessness and demographic, environmental and health problems.
