HIST390: Material Life, Culture and Society in Early Modern Europe |
Tackles some very interesting issues in the social history of early modern Europe (c. 1450-1750). The unit focuses on the 'battle between carnival and lent' or the attempt to reform popular culture, which occurred at this time. Among resources we will use are the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Brueghel, Rabelais' Gargantua and Pantagruel, the film The Return of Martin Guerre, the works of Carlo Ginzburg, and whatever tells us of the intimate lives of ordinary English villagers.
