LAW526: Language, Violence and Justice: The Legal Regulation of Hatred |
The unit provides students with an opportunity to explore the ways in which the law deals with hatred as either the motivation for an action or as a legal wrong in itself. Discussion will centre around (but is not limited to) three core phenomena of hate speech, hate crimes and genocide; this taxonomy then provides a framework in which specific issues can be considered. Comparing and contrasting behaviours and the differing degrees of criminalisation associated with them, students will be encouraged to examine in depth the various and complex relationships between language, violence and justice which characterise contemporary legal attempts to regulate hatred.
