LAW527: Law and Government |
This unit will introduce students to a range of theoretical and practical debates about the nature and role of government in the State, and will examine in detail the roles of State institutions such as the public service, the Cabinet, the Ministry and the Houses of Parliament in responding to a range of contemporary issues such as control of the armed forces, freedom of information, border protection and internal security. The unit will present law as a mechanism for the control and maintenance of government. It will focus on how parliamentary debates, parliamentary inquiries, Royal Commissions and other mechanisms are used to enhance or control the power of executive government.
Students interested in legal and political theory, and students interested in working in politics or the public service will be particularly interested in taking the unit.
