MATH136: Mathematics IB

Induction. Functions of two variables, partial derivatives, stationary points, chain rule, directional derivative. Differential equations: separation of variables, exact first-order linear, constant-coefficient linear, applications. Improper integrals. Sequences and series: various tests for convergence and divergence, Taylor series, power series, application to differential equations. Vector spaces: the plane and 3-space, simple theorems, subspaces, spanning sets, linear independence, dimension, basis. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalisation of matrices, symmetric matrices. Polynomials and their roots, factorisation of polynomials. Finding polynomials to go through a finite number of points. Curve fitting. Introduction to group theory. Binomial theorem.
