MCSI250/350: Truth and Persuasion in Contemporary Media |
In the postmodern era, the emphasis on constructed realities and subjective interpretations is often at odds with basic media values such as objectivity and truthfulness in reporting. This unit looks at the themes of truth and persuasion in the context of contemporary media, examining specific practical and ethical issues such as objectivity vs subjectivity, privacy vs public interest, political correctness, accusations of media bias, and the alleged "dumbing down" of the media. These broad issues are then examined in greater depth in relation to four specific areas of the media: news reporting, advertising, reality TV and televangelism.
