PHYS270: Astronomy

This unit is a general-education foundation course in astronomy suitable for aspiring physicists/astronomers and non-scientists alike. No prior knowledge of astronomy or physics is required. The aim is to give a broad descriptive underpinning of basic astronomical subjects and concepts with the essential but minimal mathematical content. Topics range from our sun, moon and planets to stars, galaxies, quasars, black holes and the greater universe. Key fundamental physical principles, theories and observational technologies are covered. Experimental work is both hands-on and computer based, covering such topics as geometrical and physical optics, spectra, galaxy classification, eclipses and sunspots. A session at the Division's observatory forms an integral part of the practical work.
