PSY345: Applied Social Research

The primary objective of this unit is to teach social research as a practical tool that can be applied to real problems (eg employee motivation, leadership, the impact of social change). Social research is not something that can be learnt from a textbook. There is something artificial (and extremely boring) about studying methods of research in the abstract. Consequently, the emphasis in this unit is on the design and execution, by small groups, of a substantive piece of social research. Questions of the best methods to use (eg interview, self-complete survey), ethics, the relationship between facts, values, and theories, and so on will become real as the lectures and group work progress.
