SOC180: Introduction to Popular Culture and Society |
This unit introduces students to the sociological study of society and culture through the prism of 'popular culture'. Popular culture refers to cultural forms that are 'popular' (eg, watching television and eating fast food), and the assumptions that are attached to such activities (eg, of the masses, mere entertainment, 'trash', etc). But popular culture is much more than a set of cultural practices: it also provides us with invaluable information about social life and how we conduct it.
Developing the theme that popular culture tells us a great deal about society and how it changes over time, the unit introduces students to a range of sociological concepts and invites them to consider how these concepts help us understand the modern world and our place in it.
Each year a number of case studies or topics in popular culture will be selected for in-depth study. Students should also note that there will be classroom activities and assignments requiring them to relate the sociological topics studied to their own experiences of popular culture.
