SOC233: Social Policy |
This course provides a basic analytical introduction to the core ideas of social policy. Two analytical frames of reference govern the course. Firstly, what does a modern society need to do in order to protect itself in relation to a market or capitalist economy? Secondly, what public values should guide social policy, and why are these public values important? The course explores the roles of government and the market in social policy. It examines the breakdown of the Keynesian welfare state, and explores ideas for a new social settlement that may underpin the welfare state of the new century. Students are encouraged to apply the ideas of the course to current debates in Australian social policy.
