ABST100: Introduction to Australian Indigenous Studies |
This unit is an introduction to Aboriginal society and its cultural, historical and political interaction with the wider non-Aboriginal community. In the course of the unit students are introduced to the fundamentals of Aboriginal culture, the history of Aboriginal colonial experience as well as a range of contemporary social and political issues.
During the course of the unit particular emphasis is placed on the necessity of understanding the fundamentals of Aboriginal culture when examining historical as well as contemporary Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal political and economic relations.
In particular, students will explore the topic and issue of Aboriginal identity, its characteristics, influencing factors, many forms and broader political implications. In order for students to appreciate the diversity of Aboriginal Australians students will have the opportunity to hear from a wide range of Indigenous guests ranging from academics, through to artists, performers, and community elders.
