In this unit students will visit a range of Australian Indigenous artists, organisations, cooperatives and communities. The locations visited will primarily be in Northern and Central Australia.
The intention of this unit is to provide students with a unique opportunity to see and hear directly from Indigenous artists "on country", and in doing so allow students the opportunity to place the art and artists within their original cultural, social and natural environments. In addition students will have the opportunity to consider the socio-economic environment in which Indigenous art is created and the relationship between the artist, the local economy, the industry and national Indigenous arts policy.
While the visits will be primarily in Northern and Central Australia, exact artists, locations, duration and costs will vary according to artist and community availability. The unit will be offered in the mid-semester break, second semester, and is intended to be no longer than 10 days.
As the aim is to allow participants to have an intimate and culturally appropriate experience, places will be limited to no more than 15, with priority given to students able to demonstrate an academic interest in a related field or discipline. This unique unit is a joint development between Warawara Department of Indigenous Studies and the Art Gallery of NSW. Students will be accompanied by an Indigenous staff member of the Art Gallery of NSW as well as one academic from Warawara-Department of Indigenous Studies.
