ANTH365: Spirituality, Cults and the New Millennium |
Although the twentieth century witnessed the rise of secularism and subsequent assertions that 'God is dead', religion remains a vital feature of life in the twenty-first century-although its contours have changed considerably. ANTH365 traces these changing contours through a focus on specific topics such as: the turn away from institutional religion towards 'spirituality' and New Age philosophies and practices (including neo-Shamanism, crystal balls, tarot cards, auras); the rise of Evangelical and Pentecostal Christianities; non-western 'cults' such as the Unification Church and the Krishna Consciousness; transnational religious traffic in relics and images; and the commoditization of religious forms. Through a variety of topics, this course will outline theoretical perspectives about the human experience in modernity and post-modernity.
