CBMS101: Introductory Chemistry A

This unit has no prerequisites and provides an introduction to the core principles and practical aspects of general and physical chemistry. Elements and compounds are classified in terms of their observed properties, the periodic table and structural insights. Various aspects of chemical reactions are considered: mass and energy changes; acid/base processes; oxidation/reduction phenomena; precipitation; decomposition. Other key topics are: chemical bonding and molecular structure; chemical equilibrium; geochemical cycles.

This unit is recommended for all science students, especially those majoring in the earth sciences or biological sciences.
