CUL205: Drama, Screen, Society |
This unit looks at the relationship between society and culture in the understanding of theatre and screened texts. It begins by examining the emergence of naturalist and realist dramatic forms in the late nineteenth century, and goes on to the twentieth century, with examples including Brecht, Godard and Schwarzenegger. In particular it will focus on contextualising drama, film and television as social phenomena, drawing on a variety of genres and movements from melodrama through German Expressionism to Hollywood feminism and drama-documentary. SOC180 is recommended as a valuable preparatory study for this unit.
