ECJS943: Mission, Conversion and Piety |
Students enrol in this unit taught by the University of Sydney. The unit considers theorists of conversion (eg Nock, Horton and Rambo) and applies their insights to the spread of Christianity in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The political and sociological motivations for a change of faith from the fourth century onward and examined in detail. The course concentrates on the conversions of the Celtic and Germanic peoples and focuses on the role of missionaries and kings in translating the christian message into culturally appropiate forms in each case.
