ENGL265: Literature and Culture |
This unit examines the interrelationships between texts - literary and non-literary, including film and television - and the cultures of which they form a part. Particular attention will be paid to the historical, social, political and intellectual contexts in which art is produced. The themes and texts of the unit change from year to year.
In 2006, the topic will be 'the country and the city', a broad survey of historical, cultural and literary changes from the Middle Ages to the present day as represented in texts of different types. Topics covered may include: the medieval garden and its literature; the pastoral; the country house poem; the Romantic landscape; the industrial city; and the nineteenth-century novel; the Australian bush and its mythology; urbanism and surburbanism; and the growth of postmodern Sydney.
