ENGL320: Modernism |
This unit examines the revolution in literature and culture that occurred at the beginning of the twentieth century. Issues to be discussed include: the death of God; the discovery of the Unconscious; imperialism and colonialism; the crisis of tradition; feminism and patriarchy; and the literary, cultural and ideological impact of the First World War. Writers to be studied include Conrad, Eliot, Freud and Jung, Joyce, Lawrence, Nietzsche, Woolf and Yeats. Texts will include Joyce's Ulysses, Lawrence's Women in Love and Woolf's To the Lighthouse, as well as the poetry of Yeats and Eliot. Late enrolment is discouraged; early reading is encouraged.
