A broad survey of the progress of life; patterns of evolution and mass extinctions in the past; waxing and waning of faunal provinces; fossil communities; biological nomenclature in outline; outline of morphology of the main groups of fossil plants and animals; principles of biostratigraphy; and the applications of palaeontology to solving geological problems.
