GEOS351: Heritage and Conservation

This unit explores conceptual, policy and professional debates about the ways in which heritage management and conservation contribute to a sense of place. The identification, formal recognition and preservation of immoveable heritage items and sites is covered in relation to natural and cultural heritage items, including those of indigenous and minority groups, and at a range of geographical scales and political levels. The importance of the cultural context of heritage and its relationship to education, recreation, tourism and a sense of community are also discussed. A basis is established for further development of specific competencies in the heritage field. Examples of bureaucratic and legal heritage frameworks are drawn from Australia and a number of other nations, while the World Heritage Convention represents the global scale.
