GEOS426: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Applications

This is an advanced unit in GIS, which builds on work undertaken in GEOS264 and GESO371. It focuses on three themes: GIS applications, GIS software and GIS research agenda. The study of GIS applications includes site visits to GIS installations in diverse organisations and the study of current research. GIS research agenda focus on topics selected from the UCGIS (University Consortium of GIS) list and include: issues of spatial data integration, scale, spatial analysis in a GIS environment, uncertainty in spatial data, and GIS and society. Specialised components of GIS software are also studied. An individual project in an application area nominated by the student introduces skills in project design, project management, spatial data acquisition and integration, and report preparation and presentation. Teaching is by means of tutorials and seminars, with assignments taking the form of reviews, reports and presentations. The goal of this unit is that students become independent practitioners of GIS. Successful ex-students have been employed as GIS specialists in a wide range of organisations.
