HIST216: Aboriginal Australian History

This unit examines Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations in nineteenth-century Australia. Ranging across a broad canvas, it focuses on the political, economic, environmental and cultural impacts of contact, contextualising the nineteenth-century legacy. In particular, it provides a basis for understanding contemporary race relations by locating the roots of the land rights issue and issues like black deaths in custody and the stolen generations. Were there human rights concerns in the nineteenth century as there are today? Were black/white relations all bad? This unit should be of special interest to students who have completed HIST109.
