MCSI290/390: Special Topic in Christian Studies

This unit is presented in two modes. In individual mode (available at 300 level only) students MUST consult with the convener before enrolment. In consultation with the unit convener, students will be assigned a staff supervisor who will guide them through a program of study in a specific area of Christian Studies of particular interest to the student.

Decoding the Da Vinci Code and Dan Brown

This unit adopts an inter-disciplinary approach to the pop cultural phenomenon of the Da Vinci Code and Dan Brown's writings. The unit is presented by teachers from disciplines such as biblical studies, ancient and medieval history, feminist studies, art history, and philosophy of science. The unit seeks to account for the extraordinary popularity of the Da Vinci Code and what is shows us about contemporary society and its perspective on the Christian church. The unit will use the tools of various disciplines to examine the accuracy of the Da Vinci Code (and Angels and Demons) and the controversial claims made concerning the interaction of Church and State, Christianity and women, science, Gnosticism etc.

MCSI Mentor Program

The MCSI Mentor Program aims to give students an opportunity to reflect on and explore work place practices in their chosen field, through consultation with an experienced Christian practitioner in the field. It provides a relationship based opportunity for students to investigate their chosen vocation in more depth from a Christian perspective. Mentors will provide students with insight into the practical outworking of Christian faith and values in the workplace. This will encompass day to day workplace practices as well as philosophical approaches to ethical and other issues in the workplace and currently accepted 'best practice'. This unit is graded only at the S/F level. Students will spend at least 156 hours in this program. Assessment includes a paper of 5,000-6,000 words. (Contact MCSI before enrolment)

SoulPurpose: Vocational Guidance for Life and Work

This unit course connects spirituality and students' present or future work. Drawing on the Bible, vocational guidance literature, psychology and life-stage research, it considers how discernment of personality, spirituality, talents, gifts, and values prepares them for the world of work. The unit is highly interactive using a range of well-tested tools and exercises designed to enable the development of personal character and a suitable vocational fit in the context of finding and fulfilling your mission through the whole of life .
