MHPG903: Famine in the Modern World |
This unit will explore the problem of famine and the nature of famine in general by focusing on three major areas in Modern World History, Ireland 1845-1850, USSR 1932-1933, Bengal 1943.
One of the key ideas is that of Amartya Sen viz the notion of "entitlements", that modern famines reflect a breakdown in a moral order, the system that determines who has the right to what food, and in what quantities, as well as breakdowns in the production and distribution of food.
