OPTO200: Optoelectronics

Optoelectronic devices are widely used in computing and communication systems, from the tiny lasers in many disk drives to the optical fibres carrying signals between continents. This unit outlines the physical basis for the technology.

An introduction to light sources, propagation and detection. Geometrical and physical optics; optical materials, fabrication and coatings, fibre optics; optical instruments, lasers. The band picture of semiconductors, electron statistics, materials and device technologies, electron-photon interactions and their manipulation. Device physics: metal-semiconductor and p-n-junction structures. Quantitative approach to continuous-wave systems using a burglar alarm as an example. Fundamentals of remote sensing.
