PHIL341: Contemporary Metaethics |
Can sentences with moral content be used to state what the world is like, or can they be used only to express emotions or encourage people to do things? Are there any moral truths, or are all moral claims false? If there are moral facts, how might we discover what they are? And how might moral truths relate to the truths of physics, biology, or sociology? In this unit we will examine what moral claims mean, how we might discover which moral claims are true, and how moral truth might fit into a scientific conception of the world. In short, we will examine semantic, metaphysical and epistemological issues raised by ethical theory.
