PHYS271: Introductory Astronomy |
This unit is a general-education foundation course in astronomy suitable for non-scientists and interested lay persons. It delivers a broad descriptive underpinning of basic astronomical subjects and concepts but with minimal mathematical content. No prior knowledge of astronomy is required. Topics covered include the solar system (Sun, moon, planets, comets etc), stars, nebulae, our Milky-Way galaxy, clusters of galaxies, quasars, black holes and basic cosmology. Key physical principles, theories and observational techniques are covered. Experimental work is both hands-on and computer-based. A session at the Division's observatory forms an integral part of the practical work.
