POL165: Introduction to Australian Politics |
This unit introduces the workings of key political institutions in Australia such as the Constitution, federalism, the High Court, governments, the public service, political parties, pressure groups, the mass media and the electoral system. We will look at some of the main debates about the way these institutions work. Are reforms necessary and what direction might they take? Many argue that in an age of globalisation the powers of nation states have become irrelevant. Does this judgement apply to Australia? Second, we will examine some of the basic but highly contested concepts of political analysis (for example, democracy, power and representation). The unit will use Australian examples to look at the different understandings of those terms held by politicians, citizens and students of politics.
