POL340: The Politics of Genocide |
This unit takes up theories of why and under what circumstances genocides occur. It looks at the nature of genocides directed at internal minorities, the ideological aspects of genocide, and case studies of modern genocides. The enquiry includes religious, racial and ethnic groups targeted, and the process of scapegoating, where the groups concerned range from hunters and gatherers (particularly Australian Aborigines) through to assimilated urban populations. The Turkish genocide against the Armenians and the Jewish Holocaust provide the themes for the study of modern genocide as a whole.
