POL341: The Politics of Health |
This unit looks at the main institutions of health in Australia and the way they have been shaped through conflicts between governments, political parties, pressure groups and the professions. We will explore several contemporary policy questions: the way the political system handles issues such as the control of smoking, the regulation of food and risk assessment (the 'genetic modification' debate) and the growing use of markets to regulate access to medical care. As these issues have global dimensions, the unit will look at international organisations and regimes and their effects on Australian health policy.
