PSY324: Animal Behaviour (interdisciplinary unit) |
This unit presents an integrated approach to the study of animal behaviour. Lectures will cover mechanisms of behaviour, learning and development, function and evolution. This will include a detailed treatment of ethology, neuroethology, imprinting and song learning, foraging behaviour, mate choice, courtship and reproductive strategies, natural selection and sexual selection. The lectures conclude with a discussion of research on animal communication, designed to illustrate the relationship between analyses of mechanism and of evolution. Practical work involves a series of laboratory classes, which provide an introduction to techniques used in the study of behaviour. Students then have the opportunity to apply these skills by conducting an independent observational project on a species of their choice.
