SOC244: Science, Technology and Society |
This interdisciplinary unit is taught by sociology and science staff. Current issues in technoscience illustrate the key themes of the social shaping of science and technology versus technological determinism, and the nature of sociotechnical networks within contemporary risk society. These issues include: genetics, prenatal testing, genetically modified food and nutrition, the environment and climate change, gender and sexuality in science and technology, and computerisation. They are developed through a mix of lectures (from staff and by guest speakers), videos, readings, websites, and discussion in tutorials. Assessment is by a series of essays and exercises; there is no final examination.
