SOC292: Social Interaction and Everyday Encounters |
How are encounters structured in everyday contexts? Drawing on both classical sociological texts (Simmel, Cooley, Mead, Goffman and Garfinkel) as well as insights from recent approaches such as actor-network theory, theories of embodiment and "radical micro-sociology', this unit will address topics such as: how do we know when a conversation is about to end? Is smoking an interaction device in public settings? And does the mobile phone encourage informality and less rigid forms of sociability? Throughout the unit students will be encouraged to make their own observations regarding social interaction in the everyday contexts that they inhabit.
