SOC830: Research Design Practicum |
In this unit students will learn to design and undertake research projects of their own, as well as to evaluate research studies undertaken by others. In practical, seminar style classes, the unit provides an understanding of the nature of social research and the principals which underlie the design of effective social research projects. Students will learn how to use a variety of research designs, from case studies and ethnography, through to surveys, evaluations, longitudinal studies and quasi-experiments. Students will also gain experience developing a simple survey, from generating and piloting questionnaires, through to coding and analysing data. Working under supervision, students will be expected to develop a research proposal on a topic of their own choosing by the end of the course.
