In this unit students will be introduced to the diversity of Australian Indigenous art which ranges from the familiar Papunya Tula (or dot styled) paintings of Central Australia through to mediums such as sculpture, photography, instillation and fibre craft.
Throughout the unit students will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of the cultural, political and historical forces which have influenced the development of Australian Indigenous art. Students will also be encouraged to explore the curious and changing place of Indigenous art within broader Australian culture and iconography. In the course of the unit students will be introduced to the work of leading Indigenous artists as well as the their various mediums and cultural traditions.
This exciting unit is a joint development between Warawara Department of Indigenous Studies and the Art Gallery of NSW. (The unit will be taught at the AGNSW which is located within the city centre adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens)
This unit will be taught by Indigenous staff from of the Gallery, making use of the Gallery's extensive and unique Indigenous collection. In addition to Gallery staff, students will hear from a diversity of Indigenous guest speakers ranging from practicing artists, curators, arts educators and administrators.
