AHST240: The Dead Sea Scrolls and Second Temple Judaism |
With the discoveries at Qumran a new insight into second-temple Judaism was afforded. This unit will study the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the attempt to identify their authors as the Essenes, otherwise known from the histories of Josephus. More particularly, we will look at the beliefs and literature of the community and what this tells us about them and their place in the Judaism of the times. All documents will be read in English translation.
