AHST271: Ancient Greek Religion

An examination of the sources for and approaches to the study of ancient Greek religion. The focus is on the polis religion of Athens in the archaic and classical periods. Topics covered will include the definition of religion, sacrifice, votive religion, prayer, piety and impiety, oracles, prophecy and divination, religious personnel, sacred space - sanctuaries and temples, sacred laws, the cults of the gods and of the heroes, festivals and religious change.
