AHST310: Archaeological Field Work

D1 students complete six weeks' full-time participation in an excavation in Egypt during the excavation season (usually November to January), visit other nearby archaeological sites and present a research essay on a topic related to the excavation. Numbers in this option are strictly limited and prospective students must consult Professor Kanawati, Dr Ockinga or Dr Köhler prior to enrolment.

Several options are available for D2 students. They may complete the four-weeks summer course in archaeological field work of Tel Aviv University in July or August, which consists of full-time residential participation in an excavation in Israel, together with the concurrent course on the historical geography and archaeology of the coastal plain of Israel. Prospective students must consult a relevant staff member before enrolling. The balance of the half year will be spent in a program of related study either abroad or at Macquarie, for which students must secure approval from the Dean of Division before leaving Australia. Information on other courses abroad which would fulfil this requirement may be available. A pass in the unit will require the credit awarded by Tel Aviv University in respect of the course there and the production of a satisfactory written report on the program of related study by the end of the Macquarie half-year.

D2 students whose preference lies in the study of classical antiquity may instead complete the field school at the site of Pompeii. Prospective students should consult Dr Kearsley prior to enrolment.

Students are individually responsible for meeting the tuition and residential charges and otherwise for planning and paying for travel and accommodation. Advice on obtaining concessions and grants-in-aid may be obtained through the Department. This unit has a number of prerequisites. Students planning to enrol in this unit must consult a member of staff to plan for future enrolment.
