CBMS208: Chemical Analysis I |
This unit is designed to serve the needs not only of students majoring in chemistry but also those from other areas such as the biological, environmental, earth and medical sciences. The unit introduces the principles of chemistry applied to separating, detecting, identifying and quantifying samples of matter. Such samples may range from contaminants in river systems, heavy metals in ores and alloys, drugs in biological tissue, to neurochemicals present in a single neuron. Topics include: sampling methods; statistical analysis of chemical data; chromatographic separation of pharmaceuticals; flow-injection analysis of environmental and biological samples; ion-selective electrodes; potentiometric titration, buffer solutions and titrimetry. Hands-on experience in many of these techniques is reinforced with state-of-the-art equipment.
