CHN212: Traditional Chinese Thought |
Traditional Chinese thought has an enduring influence on Chinese culture and that of some other Asian countries. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the development of the major schools of thought, namely, Confucian, Daoist and Legalist in ancient China. Based on the reading of the classical texts that represent these major schools students are encouraged to develop critical and creative thinking about another place and time. Emphasis will be placed on such key issues as the concepts of kingship, self-cultivation and the debate on human nature. This course will establish a foundation for advanced study of Chinese intellectual and cultural history. Students of contemporary Chinese culture and society will also benefit from the course as it provides a relevant historical background.
