EDUC106: Education: The Social and Historical Context |
The ideas that inform EDUC106 are predominantly sociological and historical, but the disciplines of cultural studies, philosophy, politics and economics also have a strong influence. EDUC106 presents a socio-cultural history of Australian education. This unit is one of two foundation units offered by the School of Education. It is designed to complement EDUC105, the other foundation unit, but has a different approach to the study of education and draws on different theoretical disciplines.
The unit is offered in semesters one and two. In the first semester the unit is offered in external mode (EDUC106 X1) mainly to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma and Bachelor of Education (Primary). In external mode students undertake most of their study independently, attending either a weekly tutorial (if available) or two on-campus days. In semester 2 the unit is offered in external (EDUC106 X2) and internal day mode (EDUC106 D2), with two weekly lectures and one weekly tutorial. Undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake the unit in internal day mode.
