ELEC280: Simulation and Measurement

This unit provides background theory and software experience with computer-aided design tools and measurement techniques. This is recommended for students going on to 300-level Electronics or areas of study requiring experimental and software experience. The unit considers system parameters in terms of the time, frequency and network domains. Then the operation of measurement equipment and use of computer simulation techniques for each are studied. The unit covers measurement of time-domain signals with oscilloscopes and data-acquisition equipment and simulation with SPICE. Measurement in the frequency domain, with spectrum analysers, is correlated with simulation with Harmonic Balance simulators and Fourier analysis with MathCAD or Matlab. The concept of network analysis and the operation of network analysers are introduced. Simulation techniques are covered for determining network parameters, including frequency response, scattering parameters, and transfer characteristics.
